Portmanor to complete the sign of four?

With a hat-trick of South-East London pubs sold in the same week, licensed leisure specialists AG&G are hoping The Portmanor, SE25, will continue a winning run.

Once known as The Signal, The Portmanor is a landmark pub just 100 metres from Norwood Junction station, which provides frequent services to London Bridge.

Boasting a prominent position on the corner of Portland Road and total site area of approximately 295 square metres (3,175 square feet), the property has ground and first-floor trading areas, a basement storage area and a small patio. The timber-floored upstairs function room has separate access, a small commercial kitchen and its own customer toilets. Offers are invited for the freehold, which is being sold with vacant possession.

“This is an attractive 19th century pub next to a busy station with a mixture of residential and retail properties nearby, so we think it has plenty of potential for the right investor – either as a pub or possibly with another use, subject to the necessary planning consents,” says AG&G’s Panyiotis Themistocli.

“Three other South-East London pubs we have been marketing were snapped up in the same week and we expect The Portmanor to generate just as much interest. Demand is still strong for properties like these that are in good condition and in promising urban locations.”

As well as having been home to Arthur Conan Doyle, who featured South Norwood in two Sherlock Holmes stories – The Adventure of the Norwood Builder and The Sign of Four – the Norwood area can claim fellow author D H Lawrence as a former resident. The area takes its name from the Great North Wood, an oak forest that once covered much of South London.

The three pubs recently sold through AG&G were the Ship & Billet, SE10, a three-storey property opposite the former Greenwich Hospital; The Thicket Tavern, SE20, a landmark property close to Crystal Palace station; and The Carlton Tavern, SE15, a street-corner pub in a residential area of Southwark.
